Climate in the News:
Parts of the Southern Region are forecast to see some significant rain this week, per the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center’s 7-Day Quantitative Precipitation Forecast. A low-pressure system is sitting over South Texas and will help precipitation chances over the next few days in Southeast Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Much of Louisiana is forecast to receive four inches of rain this week.
Weather Synopsis:
Just in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday a strong cold front pushed through the Southern Region. Behind the cold front low temperatures were very chilly, reaching the mid 20s in Oklahoma.
Temperature:
Overall, November is when most of the Region starts to see temperatures cooling down. Weekly cold fronts are quite common, bringing with them colder air masses from the north.
Temperatures across the Southern Region were quite chilly last week. Two strong cold fronts pushed through the Region, one on Monday and the other in the early hours of Thanksgiving morning. Temperatures were their coolest in Northern Oklahoma where weekly average temperatures were about 5 degrees below normal. Overall, weekly average temperatures ranged from about 60 to 40 degrees, about 5 degrees cooler than the week prior.
Precipitation:
The climate for much of the Region is humid and subtropical, with rainfall common at any point of the year. Frequently, during the fall months, cold fronts bring showers and thunderstorms. The boundary between the cold and warm air masses serves as a trigger mechanism for storms.
Rain was sparse last week in the Southern Region. No precipitation fell besides a few showers on Tuesday morning in the Eastern portion of the Region ahead of the first cold front of the week. Accumulations from these showers were minimal of about an inch or less.
