Climate in the News:
NOAAs Climate Prediction Center 6-10 Day Temperature Outlook suggests cooler than normal temperatures for the Eastern United States as we begin December. Temperatures are forecasted to be well below normal in Tennessee and chances become smaller the farther south and west. These cooler temperatures will be enforced by two cold fronts which are forecasted to move through the Southern Region this week, brining cool air from Canada.
Weather Synopsis:
Last week began with a strong cold front crashing through the Southern Region. This front significantly cooled things off, with temperatures behind the cold front as much as 15 to 20 degrees cooler.
Temperature:
Overall, November is when most of the Region starts to see temperatures cooling down. Weekly cold fronts are quite common, bringing with them colder air masses from the north.
Temperatures were cool and comfortable across the Region last week. After a strong cold front to start the week, as discussed above, an additional surge of cold air pushed down mid-week cooling things off even more. Weekly average temperatures were near normal in the Southern Region last week. This led to weekly average temperatures that ranged from 62 to 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
Precipitation:
The climate for much of the Region is humid and subtropical, with rainfall common at any point of the year. Frequently, during the fall months, cold fronts bring showers and thunderstorms. The boundary between the cold and warm air masses serves as a trigger mechanism for storms.
The Southern Region saw widespread precipitation, with the exception of South Texas. This rainfall occurred Monday into Tuesday as the cold front advanced through the Southern Region. Precipitation totals were modest across the Region, near an inch to an inch and a half in most places. The largest weekly precipitation totals were seen along the coast in Southeast Louisiana.
