Climate in the News:
Wednesday a strong cold front is forecasted to move through the Region leaving a cool and dry airmass in its wake. The above map displays forecasted Thursday mornings lows across the contiguous United States. The cold front is expected to bring low temperatures to Texas as low as 33 degrees Fahrenheit. In Southeast Texas these morning lows are forecasted to be as much as 10 to 13 degrees below normal.
Weather Synopsis:
A cold front passed through the Region last Wednesday as well, resulting in cooler and drier temperatures for the second half of the week. This weekly cold front pattern is quite typical as the large-scale weather patterns responsible for forming these low-pressure systems form on a weekly scale typically.
Temperature:
Overall, November is when most of the Region starts to see temperatures cooling down. Weekly cold fronts are quite common, bringing with them colder air masses from the north.
Last week's cold kept the Southern Region from heating up too much, but above-normal temperatures were still felt throughout the Region. The largest temperature anomalies were observed in Far West and Southeast Texas. This led to weekly average temperatures that ranged from 65 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Precipitation:
The climate for much of the Region is humid and subtropical, with rainfall common at any point of the year. Frequently, during the fall months, cold fronts bring showers and thunderstorms. The boundary between the cold and warm air masses serves as a trigger mechanism for storms.
Rainfall was observed in the eastern portion of the Region last week as a stationary boundary sat over the area at the beginning of last week. This resulted in weekly rainfall totals in eastern Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee around an inch and a half.
