Last week the Southern Region saw temperatures below normal with significant rainfall for the Eastern portion of the Region. This resulted in another week of drought improvements for Tennessee and Northern Mississippi. These improvements have led to the vast reduction of severe drought (D2) in both states. Unfortunately, though, the Southern Plains struggled to see much if any rainfall last week. This led to continuing one-class drought degradations scattered across the area.
Looking into the future, as outlined by the 8-14 Day Hazards by the Climate Prediction Center, the North-Central Plains of Texas and Great Plains Country of Oklahoma are at risk for flash drought. This is a result of forecasted extreme temperatures and low topsoil moisture.
