U.S Drought Monitor for the Southern Climate Region, Valid June 18th

U.S Drought Monitor Class Change Map for Southern Climate Region, Valid June 18th

Last week, rainfall in the Southern Region was concentrated just west of the dryline in northwest Texas. Otherwise, only summertime spotty showers occurred for the rest of the region. This resulted in one-class degradations in northern Arkansas, northern Mississippi, and Tennessee. These degradations led to the expansion and introduction of abnormally dry conditions in the three states. Western Oklahoma, which has been struggling with drought since the beginning of April, also saw one-class degradations which led to the expansion of moderate drought (D1) in the area.

Looking into the future, rainfall brought to south and parts of west Texas by Tropical Depression Alberto should help to bring some drought improvements to the region. So far, the majority of the Rio Grande Valley received 5 inches of rain, with some areas seeing as much as 8 inches according to CoCoRaHS.
