U.S Drought Monitor for the Southern Climate Region, Valid June 11th

U.S Drought Monitor Class Change Map for Southern Climate Region, Valid June 11th

Last week, rainfall in the Southern Region was concentrated in the central portion of the region, specifically, northeast Texas and southeast Oklahoma. Some much-needed rain also fell in the Texas Panhandle though, resulting in one-class improvements. Spotty showers brought some small-scale improvements to the Edwards Plateau area of Texas. Overall though, a lack of significant rainfall and triple-digit temperatures is what the majority of west and south Texas experienced last week. Due to this, widespread one-class degradations were observed, aiding the spread of D2 and D3 drought conditions. One-class degradations were also observed in northern Mississippi leading to the introduction of abnormally dry conditions in many counties.

Looking into the future, as outlined by 3-7 Day and 8-14 Hazards, south and southeast Texas can expect heavy precipitation from May 19th to the 23rd as a tropical system has a moderate chance of developing and is forecasted to move into the area. This rainfall should help to bring some drought improvements to Deep South Texas.
