U.S Drought Monitor for the Southern Climate Region, Valid May 21st

U.S Drought Monitor Class Change Map for Southern Climate Region, Valid May 21st

Although large amounts of rain fell in southeast Texas and along the Gulf Coast last week, those regions are not impacted by drought. As a result, both degradations and improvements were minimal across the region last week. Some of last week's storms did start in Central Texas, and thus some one-class improvements were observed. Small one-class improvements were also observed in west-central Texas, northern Oklahoma, and in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Only some small one-class degradation was observed in Terry, Hockley, and Collingsworth Counties in the Texas Panhandle.

Looking into the future, as outlined by both the 6-10 and 8-14 day Precipitation Outlook from the Climate Prediction Center, above-normal precipitation chances are forecasted for West Texas. This precipitation should help keep drought conditions from worsening, possibly improving them in some areas.
