U.S Drought Monitor for the Southern Climate Region, Valid January 23rd

U.S Drought Monitor Class Change Map for Southern Climate Region, Valid January 23rd

As of this Tuesday, heavy precipitation has caused impressive one-class improvements to Central and East Texas, as well as Eastern Tennessee and parts of Arkansas.

The Austin area received 3.11 inches of rain on Monday and areas in east Texas and Louisiana received daily high record precipitation on this day, bringing over 2 inches of rain to parts of Louisiana including Caddo Parish and De Soto Parish.

While not much rain fell over the past week (as of Tuesday) in Tennessee, melted snow from the week before contributed to its widespread class improvement. As temperatures warmed and reached past freezing temperatures, snow melted and caused flooding concerns in eastern Tennessee.

Arkansas, however, saw significant precipitation on Monday. Stations in the central part of the state recorded more than 1 inch of rain that day. This week’s drought improvements have amended the drought in Central Arkansas. However, other areas across the state are still abnormally dry and experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions.

Unfortunately, Louisiana and Mississippi are still under an exceptional drought. As rainfall continues across the southern region this week, it is expected to improve drought conditions in long-term drought-affected areas. Check back for next week’s drought update for our region on February 1st, 2024.
