U.S Drought Monitor for the Southern Climate Region, Valid October 10th, 2024

U.S Drought Monitor Class Change Map for Southern Climate Region, Valid October 10th

With the exception of the Gulf Coast, the Southern Region did not see any rainfall last week. Topsoil moisture was minimal across Texas, Oklahoma, Western Arkansas, and Louisiana. So, a lack of precipitation resulted in widespread one-class degradation across these four states. Drought severity continues to worsen along the Red River with much of the Texas-Oklahoma border identified as extreme drought (D3). Drought degradation in Far West Texas has contributed to the expansion of exceptional drought (D4) in the area, which now covers a sizable area. Drought intensity (D2 - D4) has expanded over four percent from last week.
