Thunderstorms brought much needed moisture and relief to some parts of the Southern Region. An upper atmosphere disturbance and sea breeze initiated thunderstorms in Texas, Louisiana, and parts of Arkansas and Mississippi - most abundantly along the coastline. This created a contrast of below normal temperatures in the southwest and above normal temperatures in the northeast of the Southern Region. Areas that experienced the combination of cool(-ish) temperatures and heavy rainfall improved drought conditions. Drought ameliorated throughout central Texas and in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. Areas that experienced little to no rain deteriorated in drought. Many counties in Tennessee and Texas updated to (D1) Moderate Drought conditions.
Looking to the future, the Climate Prediction Center highlighted a slight risk for heavy precipitation across the Gulf Coast and Southeast for September 11-15. A stationary front and a high potential for a tropical cyclone places the coasts of the Southern Region at risk for flooding.
